E-E Adds another District Title to Trophy Case

(EDCOUCH) – The Edcouch-Elsa Lady Jackets Volleyball Team has brought home six district titles in seven years.
Now they can make it seven titles in the past eight years.
The Lady Jackets added another district title to their already cramped trophy case as they captured the 32-5A title after defeating Donna High in three straight sets this past Tuesday.
Edcouch-Elsa head volleyball coach Ofelia Griffith said she was extremely proud of what her kids accomplished and that they were able to achieve their goal they set out for since day one.
“I am very proud of my girls,” said Griffith. “Since day one, the girls had one goal in mind and that was to win the title outright. Last season, we had to share it with Donna High and they didn’t want to share it with anyone.”
“So they put in the work each and every day in practice and played their hearts out in the games as well. They did what had to be done and were rewarded in the process.”
And while each and every district title was bittersweet, Griffith feels that last season’s title was one of the sweetest.
“To be honest with you, we weren’t even considered to win a title last year,” said Griffith. “We had such a young group and graduated some key girls in 2013. So we knew 2014 was going to be a total rebuilding year.”
“We got off to such a rough start early in the season and lost quite a few games. But the girls continued to work and got stronger as the season rolled on. And when district play started, we were peaking and hit our stride. Lucky for us, we ended up sharing the district title and it set the tone for the 2015 season.”
The 2015 season can definitely be one too remembered for the Lady Jackets; not only for the fact that they won the district title, but for the fact they had to overcome quite a few obstacles this year.
“We have definitely had some obstacles to overcome this season,” said Griffith. “We had some girls go down to key injuries such as Ale Martinez who was our middle blocker and just recently, had our setter Jackie De Los Santos go down with an injury.”
“Besides some key injuries we endured, one of our girls has been battling cancer as Sieanna Ortiz was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. And while the girls have had to overcome so much, they have come together and continued to play hard. Also, we had some girls come off the bench and do a tremendous job while filling in for the starters that went down. That says a lot about our girls and the fact that each and every one of them knows their roles.”
Now the Lady Jackets have their sights set on the playoffs and Griffith feels this group can add a few more titles to their collection.
“Honestly, I feel this team can get to the Regional Quarterfinals, “said Griffith. “These kids are a special group and have faced some stiff competition this year. They were tested and answered the call quite a bit in games this season.”
“Now we need to set our sights on season two and add to the district title that we won. This group can go as far as they want to and it’s up to them to decide if we make a deep run or bow out early.”
